Wisdom tooth removal
Surgical removal of a wisdom tooth that is impacted, partly erupted or causing repeated infection.
Who it is for
Patients with recurring swelling or pain at the back of the jaw, or decay in a wisdom tooth or the tooth in front of it.
What happens during treatment
- An X-ray (sometimes a 3D scan) shows the tooth position and nearby nerves.
- The area is numbed; a small opening in the gum gives access to the tooth.
- The tooth is removed, sometimes in sections, and the gum is stitched.
- You receive prescriptions and a review appointment.
Aftercare
- Swelling usually peaks on day two or three; cold packs help on the first day.
- Keep the area clean with gentle warm salt-water rinses from the day after surgery.
Questions about this treatment
Do all wisdom teeth need removal?
No. Healthy wisdom teeth that are fully erupted and easy to clean can stay.
How long is recovery?
Most people need two to four days of rest; stitches are reviewed after about a week.
