Tooth extraction
Removal of a tooth that cannot be saved because of decay, infection, gum disease or crowding.
Who it is for
Patients whose dentist has advised that a tooth cannot be restored, or for orthodontic reasons.
What happens during treatment
- We review your medical history and medicines, especially blood thinners.
- The tooth and gum are numbed with local anaesthetic.
- The tooth is gently loosened and removed.
- Gauze is placed and you receive written aftercare instructions.
Aftercare
- Bite on the gauze for 30–45 minutes. Do not spit, rinse or use a straw for 24 hours.
- Eat soft, cool food on the first day and avoid smoking.
Questions about this treatment
Should I replace the missing tooth?
Often yes, to keep neighbouring teeth from drifting. Options include an implant, bridge or denture; we discuss these with you.
Can I go to work the next day?
Most people can, after a simple extraction.
