Scaling and polishing

Professional removal of tartar and stains from above and just below the gum line to help keep gums healthy.

Who it is for

Adults with bleeding gums, bad breath or visible tartar, and anyone due for a routine clean, typically every six months.

What happens during treatment

  1. Your gums are checked and measured.
  2. An ultrasonic scaler and hand instruments remove tartar.
  3. Teeth are polished to remove stains and smooth the surface.
  4. We show you brushing and flossing methods suited to your teeth.

Aftercare

  • Mild sensitivity for a day or two is common; a sensitivity toothpaste can help.
  • Brush twice daily and clean between teeth once a day.

Questions about this treatment

Does scaling weaken teeth?

No. It removes deposits on the tooth surface and does not remove enamel.

How often should I have it done?

Most people benefit every six months; your dentist may suggest a different interval.
