Emergency dental visit
Same-day assessment for severe toothache, swelling, a broken or knocked-out tooth, or bleeding after an extraction.
Who it is for
Anyone with dental pain that stops them eating or sleeping, facial swelling, or dental injury.
What happens during treatment
- Call the clinic so we can keep a chair ready.
- The dentist finds the cause, usually with an X-ray.
- We relieve the immediate problem, for example by draining an abscess, dressing a tooth or splinting a loose tooth.
- If more treatment is needed, we explain the options and book a follow-up.
Aftercare
- Take medicines exactly as prescribed.
- If swelling spreads to the eye or neck, or you have difficulty breathing or swallowing, go to a hospital emergency department immediately.
Questions about this treatment
What should I do with a knocked-out tooth?
Hold it by the crown, not the root. Rinse gently if dirty, keep it in milk or inside your cheek, and come in within an hour if you can.
Do you see emergencies outside clinic hours?
We answer calls during clinic hours. After hours, please go to the nearest hospital emergency department.
