Root canal treatment

Treatment for an infected or inflamed tooth nerve: the inside of the root is cleaned, disinfected and sealed so the tooth can be kept.

Who it is for

Patients with lingering toothache, sensitivity to hot food, swelling near a tooth, or an infection seen on X-ray.

What happens during treatment

  1. The tooth is numbed and isolated with a rubber dam to keep it dry and clean.
  2. The infected pulp is removed and the canals are shaped with fine instruments.
  3. Canals are disinfected and sealed with gutta-percha.
  4. The tooth is closed with a filling; a crown is usually advised for back teeth.

Aftercare

  • Tenderness when biting for a few days is common; take pain relief as advised.
  • Avoid chewing hard food on the tooth until the final crown or filling is placed.

Questions about this treatment

How many visits does it take?

Often one or two visits of about 60–90 minutes, depending on the tooth and the infection.

Why do I need a crown afterwards?

Back teeth that have had root canal treatment are more likely to crack; a crown helps protect them.
